Why I Almost Missed the "Medium" Season Finale
This is a guest post from horror/thriller novelist, Michelle Gagnon.
I love Medium. I think it’s remarkable how despite the fact that the premise could quickly become trite or formulaic, the writers always find a way to push the envelope. Like the episode where Allison couldn’t hear, or the one where her body was appropriated by the murdered wife. Good stuff.
The best part for me is that Allison Dubois’s family is part and parcel of the stories, not just window dressing to make it appear that she has a life outside her job.
This past season, when both Allison and Joe lost their jobs and were potentially facing bankruptcy, it was almost hard to watch since I felt so close to the characters. And at times I found the ensuing storyline involving Joe’s new project almost more interesting than watching Alison chase down killers.
And yet, I almost couldn’t finish the final episode to find out what happened. It’s a funny thing, this season the initial episode and the final one were almost too much for me. I have no problem dealing with the dream sequences in which a woman is getting horribly tortured, but what I’ve come to realize is that anything involving a child is too much for me. I almost wish at times that the writers would shy away from it more.
Remember the show that kicked the season off, with the little boy was snatched in the toy store? Then that scene where he’s watching the man dance, giggling (the giggling for me was the worst part) and you see the man’s pants start to slide down? That almost did it for me. Add then, the mother has a dream that her son came to her…I was a puddle on the couch.
The rest of the season? No problem. The murder and mutilation of teenage girls, men, and women didn’t faze me. Until ten minutes into the final episode (Drowned World). Just when I was dying to find out what happened to Joe’s new business, there was the flashback scene with a baby crying. Terrible.
The thought of anyone drowning their child was so unsettling, the cries sounded so real, I ended up shutting off the tivo. It took me two weeks to return to the episode, and then it was only to find out what happened with Joe’s deal. I had to fast forward through everything involving the baby (although when I did finally reach the end, I thought it was an interesting and intricately woven plotline. But still, tough to watch.)
The funny part about all this is that I regularly frighten my editor with some of the scenes in my books. And yet, Medium has the power to make me cringe. I sit there with my finger on the remote button, prepared to hit pause if it all gets to be too much for me. Who would have thunk it.
