Video: Caspian’s Barnes Takes On Horror’s Dorian Gray
If you saw Prince Caspian this weekend, and are an enamored fan of Ben Barnes (as Prince Caspian), get ready to see him in a film adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s only published novel, the gothic horror piece, The Picture Of Dorian Gray.
Production is set to begin at the end of July this year, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Here’s my take on this horrific tale, as well as a video of Screamstress’ favorite Dorian Gray portrayal after the more!
In the novel, Dorian Gray is an extremely beautiful young man who becomes obsessed with living a hedonistic lifestyle after having his portrait painted. In a moment of desperation, he wishes that only his portrait would age so that he’d be handsome forever.
As in many of the literary works published in the 1800s, his wish becomes his desire, courtesy of the devil. Soon, his lifestyle of “pleasure only” casts his immortal soul into the very painting, as he begins to see all his sins there.
I’ll be interesting to see how much this film will be based on the novel (if they’ll include Dorian’s debauchery). After all, we’ve seen Hollywood take some serious departures. (can’t think of an example right now, but it’ll come to me). The relationship between Dorian and Basil should be interesting.
So far, the only film portrayal (besides the 1945 black and white movie) I’ve liked of Dorian Gray was that of Stuart Townsend in the 2003 movie, The League of Extraordinary Gentleman, which is based on a graphic novel written by Alan Moore.
You can see the video here above, which features Townsend, as well as other scenes in the movie. Note what happens when Gray sees his portrait!
Honestly, I’d rather see a movie based on something of this caliber (a literary work) as opposed to another cheesy monster remake. Don’t get me wrong, the cheesy monster films do have a huge place in my dark heart, but Dorian Gray is something I’ve been waiting for, for a long time.

i loved Stewart Townsend as Dorian Gray and i haven’t read the book but i think he was just right as the part and i love the LXG film, and i’ve seen Ben Barnes in Prince Caspian and i think he’s a bit to much of a pansy to be Dorian Gray and a little bit to young, but i’ll wait and see.
