The Ruins: Beautifully Yet Uncommonly Scary?

by Alexandra on April 3rd, 2008

Director Carter Smith’s The Ruins is out in theatres nationwide this Friday, April 4. It stars Jonathan Tucker (The Black Donnellys), Jena Malone (Donnie Darko), and Shawn Ashmore (X-Men: The Last Stand, Smallville). Here’s a trailer for the film, and although there are no spoilers per se, this film has some interesting origins.

The Premise of The Ruins
You and a group of people decide that it’d be really cool to visit an ancient Mayan temple while on vacation. What happens afterward is anyone’s guess, but we know for sure it must be something extremely horrible. The best things about this film are its psychological horror aspects. Without giving anything away, it has been said this is an uncommon sort of film.

The Director
Notably, director Carter Smith started his career in the world of fashion photography, and has directed some beautifully stunning commercials for the likes of Lancome and Tommy Hilfiger. I suspect this film will have his trademark style of cinematography, which will add to the horror theme.

The Book Called “The Ruins”
The film, The Ruins is based on a novel by Scott Smith, which follows a group of tourists on vacation in Cancun. Some aspects of the film are different from the novel. The film itself has gotten good reviews from advanced screenings for the scare factor. If you’ve read the book, don’t think the movie is ruined for you, because the author did make some changes for the film. Thankfully, it stays true to the basic premise of the story.

Are you going to see The Ruins this weekend?
