Spotlight On Steve Niles - 30 Days Of Night Creator
You can’t talk about the writer Steve Niles without mentioning the success of the film, 30 Days Of Night. Yes, he’s proud, but he also way too busy to dwell on it.
In a recent CBR interview, Steve talks about the past, present and future. One thing he mentions is the success of 30 Days Of Night, the project he co-created with Ben Templesmith, and its subsequent successful jump to the box office. He also cites a specific example of his experiences then and now (after “30 Days”). The success of the film has caused a huge crossover of new fans to his work, and he is delighted, saying “…that’s the most important thing we need to accomplish as an industry.”
In addition, Steve’s Criminal Macabre, a graphic series about the drug-
addicted detective named Cal McDonald who hunts ghouls in Los Angeles, has branched off into its own mini-series, namely Simon Dark and City Of Others.
Steve has even taken the step to have the Criminal Macabre series illustrated by a new artist each time, which shows that he’s interested in furthering the art. Although he’d love for his dark character, Cal McDonald, to grace the big screen, Niles has made it clear he doesn’t want to change or water down his character. For now, he’s waiting for “the right people” to come along, which could be sooner than later given all his recent success.
Whether its digital publishing for Batman: Gotham After Midnight, adventures of his favorite dark detective, or projects with other artists such as Bernie Wrightson, Steve Niles seems to be doing all the right things, and having the time of his life doing them. He says that his work “doesn’t even feel like work”, noting that he’s just fine working around the clock. That’s exactly what we like to hear from our favorite writers, however Steve, we do think you deserve a break every now and then.
