The Screamstress - Horror & Paranormal

Sign of the TRUE Horror Fan

by Rhys on October 25th, 2005

Welcome to a new category on The Screamstress: Hidden Horror. Here, we’ll examine horror films so obscure, so bad, so forgotten or covered up, that it is an utter embarrassment—or a badge of pride—to admit you’ve seen them!

You want to know whether or not someone is a true horror fan? Not a neophyte or a poser, or a Sci-Fi channel watcher, but a true horror fan? Just ask them this: “Have you seen
Black Devil Doll From Hell?”

The masterpiece of hack Chester Novell Turner, this film is so bad, so unbelievably bad, that you must see it. A ‘horror drama’ that is unintentionally hilarious, it is the cult classic of cult classics.

The story goes like this: repressed 70s babe Helen Black buries herself in religion and hides from men. One day, she chances into a strange store and sees a doll/puppet complete with adorable dreadlocks for sale. The cashier warns her: only women purchase this doll, and somehow, every time, he returns back to the store, until the next woman buys him. Intrigued, the fey Helen takes him home.

And, well…you must see it to believe it, but basically the doll comes to life, knocks her out, ties her to the bed, and has his way with her, in one of the longest sex scenes ever made. This could be horrifying—the idea is—but it is filmed in such a hilarious and over the top way that you can’t help but laugh, and cover your eyes, and peek, and laugh…

Just wait ‘til you see him smoke pot and blow the smoke all menacingly…my sides hurt just thinking about it.

And the production values! Certainly there are none worse in cinema history! Horrible lighting, frames, and the sound…hahahaha! Turner provided the ‘soundtrack’ by playing one of those little pink Casio keyboards. Seriously. It’s pretty awesome.

Well, the doll runs away and Helen is devastated. Apparently (cough) she found the experience so pleasurable, she must have more! She turns to picking up strange men in bars, but it just isn’t the same. She tries to find the doll again, but alas, he has already been purchased by another unsuspecting woman.

One person I talked to about this film tried to justify it with, “This film is a serious look at the exploitation of a black woman in a repressed society that doesn’t accept women as sexual creatures…blahblahblahI’m-a-pretentious-jerkblahblahblah.”

Dude, if that’s what you think, you’re completely missing the point.

Being the ultimate of hidden cult classics, it’s almost impossible to find this gem. You can sometimes come across a copy on ebay, or the used section of amazon.com, or find a nice, slightly twisted horror aficionado who will make a copy for you.

If you call yourself a true fan, watch it pronto.

Once you go Black Devil Doll, you never go back!

Hi Vilo! No, I’m not limited to just the movie subject; it’s just my expertise. :) Writing about horror novels does sound good!

And I like your poem! :)
