"Dark Knight" Star Gary Oldman on Conan: Video
Dark Knight star and diverse actor Gary Oldman was recently on Conan O’ Brien promoting the movie. As you may know, Oldman portrays the character, Commissioner Gordon, and is a veteran from the first Batman movie with Christian Bale.
I watched this interview with the intent of getting more insight into our favorite psychopath, The Joker, however the interview stayed on topic, which was also fine by me.
Here are the highlights:
The Dark Knight Mentionables
On whether CGI is used in Dark Knight: Conan pointed out many movie fans have become a bit jaded with the excess CGI in films. Oldman says there is either very little or none(?) in this film, thanks to Chris Nolan. He also reveals that in the scene where a truck is flipped over in the street, it really does get flipped over.
On the IMAX format used in the film: Oldman says that a book comes with each IMAX camera, and basically tells actors how to act, and how to wear make-up due to fact that IMAX makes everything bigger on screen.
On Oldman’s Intensity as an actor, and…Daniel Radcliff crying (?): Conan mentions that Gary is known for his intensity as an actor, and asks about the instance in which he made Daniel Radcliff cry during filming for a scene from Harry Potter in which Oldman portrays Sirius Black.
He explains while they were filming this scene, it needed to be a bit more intense or more emotional, so he asked the director to let him try something different. Moments later, he literally grabbed Daniel and shook him up, which caused him to cry.
Gary’s Music Career, Bales’ Batman Voice and Sympathy For Radcliff
Gary Oldman considered a career in music at some point, and reveals that he plays the piano and base guitar. This led to his funny impression of James Brown (which wasn’t bad, by the way). He reveals that the Beatles, James Brown and Dylan are his musical influences.
Another funny highlight toward the end was after Conan showed the clip from the film, a “rooftop scene”. Conan noted that Bales voice as Batman is amazingly unique.
Back to Radcliff, I can’t blame him for crying, as it’s noted that one of the veteran actors on Dark Knight allegedly forgot his lines in a scene with Heath Ledger…because of Heath’s…I mean Joker’s…scariness. Yikes. No doubt this film is full of intense actors.
