Can Marshall’s "Descent" Sequel Rise Above?

When six sexy female friends get together for a weekend caving (or as I learned to called it …spelunking) expedition, and it’s in a horror movie, something is bound to go wrong. In this case, the women end up trapped underground with what used to be humans, fighting for their lives. This is the premise for the movie, The Descent, directed by Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers). Now, the sequel is on the rise, and the question is, will it be enough?
It seems the sexy thriller will have the survivors of the first movie, as well as the same …read more

In the Blood

In the Blood

If anything in this world is going to screw you up, it’s your family. It’s sort of their job, in fact. And you can’t get away from it: it’s in the blood. I’ve alluded to my dark and strange family history and the people who fill it here, the fortune tellers and the insane and the cockeyed dreamers.
One of those people is my Great Grandmother Hartley. I barely remember her; to me she is just a faint perfumed shadow sliding by in a swish of seamed pantyhose. She would make rag dolls for me and my little sister, big, floppy …read more

I Am So Jealous

Where is the absolute best place you could be this weekend, the absolute best? Sipping a tropical drink on a Hawaiian beach? Nope. Entertaining friends on your own luxury yacht? Hardly. Simultaneously having the best sex of your life as you roll around on a giant pile of money you just won downstairs in the casino? Puh-leez. The correct answer is the World Horror Convention, baby!
This weekend in San Francisco, the ghoulish and macabre will rejoice among movies, literature, art, and wares of the sinister and spooky. Notable horror icons including author Peter Straub will be there, and I should …read more

That’s What I’m Talkin’ About!

It’s about time: slasher films are finally being taken seriously as a movie genre:
Starz Entertainment Group (SEG) and Independent film distributor THINKFilm announce the start of principal photography on a new film entitled “GOING TO PIECES: THE RISE AND FALL OF THE SLASHER FILM.” The film provides a comprehensive and original look at the importance, prominence, and newfound legitimacy of the horror film genre and, more specifically, the sub-genre of the “slasher film.” The feature-length documentary will contain an abundance of clips from classic films of the genre, as well as many current hits, and interviews with pre-eminent actors, …read more

Featured Site of the Week: Buzz

Welcome to one of my favorite categories on this site: Featured Site of the Week. Here’s my chance to showcase the best horror has to offer: the shining stars of the craftily creative, ghoulishly good, bloodily brilliant.
This week, I’m honored to present Camp Blood.
Most horror sites offer the same old thing: movie reviews, some gory pictures, nothing new or exciting. (Not this site, though. This site is awesome.)
And then one day…I found Camp Blood. I loved the name right off, and then I saw the tagline: Be Afraid. Be Fairy Afraid. With a line like that, I knew it …read more
