Syfy Reinvents Your Favorite Fairy Tales

Syfy wants to show you what happens when fairy tales grow up by reinventing classic stories as part of its Saturday night TV movie franchise. The contemporary reimaginings of tales like Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel & Gretel will be two of the five titles that kicks off the new series on February 27.
“It’s exciting to take a treasured brand and put our own sideways spin on it,” said Thomas Vitale, executive vp programming and original movies at Syfy. “By turning familiar timeless stories inside out, we’re creating an entertaining new genre for our popular Saturday night movie franchise,” …read more

Witch Slap

Another game review from Marcus about a witch with guns named Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme. Nice!

Gone are the days of green-skinned crones with warts and unfashionable pointy hats. Bayonetta, the impossibly stylish star of Sega’s latest opus, is anything but your stereotypical witch. Sporting a tight leather outfit, black boots and girl next door glasses, say hello to the new cosplay pinup girl.

From the creative genius that brought us the Devil May Cry series, Bayonetta is staking its claim as the most ludicrous, over-the-top game currently on the market. A third person action  beat/shoot/hack ‘em up, it kicks …read more

Lotte Reiniger’s ‘The Adventures of Prince Achmed’

Lotte Reiniger’s ‘The Adventures of Prince Achmed’

Allow me to take you on a little genre detour. A recent talk with a friend of mine reminded me about a gem of a film. There’s sorcery, black magic and witches but Lotte Reiniger’s The Adventures of Prince Achmed is more fantasy based than horror. Still I feel compelled to share with you a few videos of this beautiful 1926 Germanic tale of an Arabian Prince as told through shadow puppet animation. The oldest surviving animated feature film to be exact.
The magical beings brought to life by Reiniger were constructed through her own invention which involved manipulated cutouts made …read more

U.S. Premiere of BBC’s ‘Demons’ Coming Soon

BBC America announced that their new TV series Demons will air on January 2, 2010 at 10 PM ET/PT. No trailer available yet but here’s the story which seems to play out à la Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

“The battle against the dark underworld of half-lives, monsters and in-humans lie deep beneath the streets of modern-day London in the U.S. premiere of Demons. This contemporary spin on the character of Van Helsing features Luke Rutherford (Christian Cooke) as an average teenager, but with the arrival of his dead father’s best friend Rupert Galvin (Philip Glenister, Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes), …read more

Meet The Other Creatures of ‘Dark Shadows’

I gave you a hint about this in July and today I am beyond excited by the news that Tim Burton has officially signed on for a remake of the popular vampire soap opera, Dark Shadows–set to film in 2010. Equally exciting but not surprising is confirmation of Johnny Depp in the role of lead vampire Barnabas Collins. I’m sure we’ll be seeing some of the other usual suspects and that’s ok by me. I haven’t raced to the theater for any Burton films as of late but I have faith that the spooky visionary can do something imaginative with …read more

Track 13: Dead Man’s Bones

Thanks to one of the coolest cats in the Twitterverse (gbyrd13) I discovered a band called Dead Man’s Bones. They recently played a show in Philadelphia at The First Unitarian Church which I sadly missed but my friend was able to catch. If you’ve ever been there, I’m sure you can imagine the combination of little kids in Halloween costumes + church atmosphere = something very special.
Dead Man’s Bones is a collaboration between actors Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields who met in 2005 and became fast friends. They bonded over a shared obsession with spooky stuff and set out to create a …read more

‘Suspiria’ Remake in 2010?

Out of the films in Dario Argento’s The Three Mothers trilogy, I never expected that someone would remake one of my favorite films, Suspiria–but they are and it’s set to start shooting in 2010. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the director is David Gordon Green whose work includes Pineapple Express. Umm, what!!? The film is produced by Luca Guadagnino and it has been rumored that Natalie Portman will play the lead role of Suzy–ugh!
In the original film, Suzy Banyon, a young American ballet dancer, arrives at a prestigious European dance academy run by the mysterious Madame Blanc and Miss Tanner. After …read more

Season of the Witch

Oh Nicholas Cage.  Why did you have to do that to Wickerman?  And what’s this now about 14th century knights and the black plague?
Season of the Witch, directed by Dominic Sena, will be released by Lionsgate in theaters on March 19, 2010.  Watch Ron Perlman co-star and act as though he’d rather be working on Bubba Nosferatu: Curse of the She-Vampires.

Lindsay Price Joins "The Witches of Eastwick"

Lindsay Price Joins "The Witches of Eastwick"

Well, I guess I’d better resign myself to the fact that “Lipstick Jungle” isn’t coming back. Lindsay Price has just been cast as one of three witches in ABC’s drama pilot, “The Witches of Eastwick.”
The series, based on the 1987 feature film which starred Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer as witches, will follow three young witches realizing their powers. Price will play Joanna, a shy, hardworking reporter for the local newspaper. Jaime Ray Newman (whom I remember as Kristina Cassadine on “General Hospital”) has been cast as a fellow witch. No word on casting for the third witch.
But …read more
