More Sasquatchploitation in ‘The Legend of Grassman’
Director siblings Tyler and Dennie Meyer have crafted what they are describing as part 30’s jungle adventure, part 80’s slasher and part 70’s Bigfoot documentary in their contribution to the Sasquatchploitation genre, The Legend of Grassman.
Since Dread Central has already provided the weed/Woody Harrelson jokes, I’ll refrain (dammit), but you can check out the low-budget flick’s trailer below for more details. The film is based on the legend of the Grassman, which is the nickname of a creature reportedly sighted in Ohio.
The directors recently spoke to Monster Island News and had this to say about their creature feature:
“When it came …read more

Drew Daywalt is hard at work in the Fear Factory and has released his latest horror short, There’s No Such Thing.
The film is under four minutes and is a tale about the bedtime ritual a mother and daughter share. If you’ve seen Daywalt’s other shorts, then you know this seemingly sweet story will turn creepy fast. Check it out below and let me know what you think.
Dark Castle Taking ‘Splice’?
February 13, 2010 by Alison
I heard nothing but good reviews about Splice after it screened at the Sundance Film Festival. There was talk about the feature going straight to DVD and getting a limited theatrical release but the film, directed by Vincenzo Natali (Cube), looks like it may be getting picked up by Joel Silver’s Dark Castle label, with the promise of a 3,000 screen release!
Deadline recently reported that Dark Castle is in the final closing stages of a distribution deal for Splice and if it pans out, “it will give the film a wide summer release on 3,000 screens and a P&A commitment …read more
Dead Girls Don’t Say No and Have an ‘Exquisite Corpse’
February 11, 2010 by Alison
Upon hearing that there was a new film titled, Exquisite Corpse, I was excited to think that someone was bringing Poppy Z. Brite’s novel of the same name to the big screen. When watching the trailer I was met with something entirely different. Scott David Russell’s film starring Steve Sandvoss, Nicole Vicius, Guillermo Diaz, Tessa Thompson, and Larry Cedar, will be playing later this month at the EFM (European Film Market) and has nothing to do with a homosexual serial killer, cannibal, necrophiliac (not quite). Dammit.
Nicholas is a young neuroscientist who is obsessed with two things. He discovered a serum …read more
‘Nightbreed’ Screening at HorrorHound Weekend!
February 8, 2010 by Alison
And in other holy sh!t news, an uncut version of Clive Barker’s Nightbreed will be screened at HorrorHound Weekend in Indianapolis, which runs March 26-28! Please, please, please let this mean that a DVD and Blu-ray are in the works!
For those of you unfamiliar with Nightbreed’s back story, let me explain. Basically, the studio screwed Barker by forcing him to release an edited version of his original cut. Poor marketing and a cruddy video release made the film fade away. Thankfully, fans supported it and it was elevated to something of a cult flick. Hardcore Barker fans wondered for years …read more
Trailer for the French Thriller ‘Mutants’
February 8, 2010 by Alison
IFC Films is offering David Morlet’s French thriller, Mutants, on VOD February 10.
Sonia (Hélène de Fougerolles) and Marco (Francis Renaud) are a couple who find themselves caught in the middle of a viral pandemic that turns humans into creatures. When they seek shelter from the “mutants” Marco becomes contaminated and is eventually transformed into a monster. Sonia has to fight not only for her own life, but the life of their unborn child and protect herself from the man she once knew and loved.
I’m curious to find out what these creatures actually are. As much as I love zombies, I’m …read more
Famous Monsters of Filmland Convention on its Way!
February 2, 2010 by Alison
A little over a month ago, Famous Monsters of Filmland announced that they were rising from the ashes once more after closing the book back in 1983–191 issues deep. This was truly a sad day for fans, many who had followed the magazine since its inception in 1958 with Warren Publishing. Editor Forrest J. Ackerman enthusiastically approached every issue about the classic monsters he loved like the Wolfman and King Kong. Eventually he branched off to interviews with the people behind the scenes, including makeup artists and screenwriters–you know, the people who often go overlooked. The magazine obviously showed that …read more
New International Trailer for ‘Clash of the Titans’
Check out the new international trailer for Louis Leterrier’s Clash of the Titans redux set to release March 26. Lots of beasties, Liam Neeson as Zeus and Ralph Fiennes as Hades. Oh and it stars the really boring Sam Worthington. Sorry ladies, I think this guy is a total snooze fest and I really hope he doesn’t play Vlad in the poorly titled, Dracula: Year Zero.
“In Clash of the Titans, the ultimate struggle for power pits men against kings and kings against gods. But the war between the gods themselves could destroy the world. Born of a god but raised …read more

February 1, 2010 by Alison
Syfy wants to show you what happens when fairy tales grow up by reinventing classic stories as part of its Saturday night TV movie franchise. The contemporary reimaginings of tales like Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel & Gretel will be two of the five titles that kicks off the new series on February 27.

Video Vault: Lovecraftian Horror
January 31, 2010 by Alison
Since The Last Lovecraft: The Relic of Cthulhu just made its Slamdance Festival debut, I thought it would be proper to dedicate this Video Vault to a few noteworthy Lovecraftian horror flicks.
Caltiki – The Immortal Monster, 1959
One of the earliest Lovecraftian horror efforts, directed by Riccardo Freda, with a then unknown Mario Bava (credited as John Foam) doing cinematography. Freda claimed that Bava did most of the directing uncredited. In Caltiki, archaeologists encounter a blob-like monster while exploring Mayan ruins. The team attempts to connect the monster with a comet that passed near earth at the time the Mayan civilization …read more
