Video Vault: Schoolgirl Edition (Asian Horror and German Sleaze)

I’m donning a little plaid today (exactly where you’re imagining) and in honor of schoolgirls everywhere I present to you the Schoolgirl Edition of Video Vault . Today’s lesson consists of a few clips from the German sleaze-fest known as Schulmadchen Report (Schoolgirl Report), as well as a few Asian schoolgirl horror trailers.
During the 70’s Walter Boos, Wolf C. Hartwig and Ludwig Spitaler got together to create thirteen, super horny original films which were adapted from a book series written by Gunther Hunold. These vignettes covered themes including: interracial love affairs, male and female masturbation sequences, forced prostitution, rape, voyeurism, …read more

Fruit Chan’s ‘Don’t Look Up’ Trailer

Director Fruit Chan (Dumplings in Three … Extremes) is remaking Hideo Nakata’s 1996 horror pic, Joyû-rei. You’re probably familiar with Nakata from Ringu, which was redone as The Ring.
From the press release:
“Set in and around an abandoned film studio from another era, “Don’t Look Up” charts the unravelling sanity of a director and his crew when spirits from that era invade the film stock of the contemporary production and, in a few stark frames, open a horrifying window on a terrible curse from the past.
Don’t Look Up stars Henry Thomas, Kevin Corrigan, Lothaire Bluteau, Carmen Chaplin, and Reshad Strik. Eli Roth makes a cameo appearance.

J-Horror Isn’t Total Madness…Just A Bit Repetitive?

It’s not that Japanese horror, or J-Horror is bad. Hollywood likes it because it’s easy. We like it because it seems different. Sometimes the scares don’t translate well for us who have been spoon fed the likes of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Halloween for years.
For some, ghosts, whether they be Asian ones or the ones from say, Sixth Sense, are just boring. I love a good ghost story, but like many, I was disappointed after seeing The Grudge, because I hated the gimmicky blue cat boy. Afterwards, I was thankful the creators of other films included him, and other blue …read more

Video: "Tactics" Opening Sequence And Demon Mythology

Here’s a video featuring the opening to the TV series, Tactics. I think I’m addicted to the song. I have two episodes on my iPod, and this song is now a part of my workout playlist.
You can see Tactics production stills here at Manga.com, and some video snippets as well. It’s an interesting mix of manga and horror. See more info on Tactics’ Japanese folkloric terms that relate to the series after the video:

Oni- Demon, ogre or troll; refers to the character, Haruka.
Tengu – Supernatural spirit or monstrous creature; refers to the character Haruka.
Youkai- Apparition, or spirit; refers to …read more

China Says No To Horror, But We Still Have Japan

China Says No To Horror, But We Still Have Japan

As the 2008 Beijing Olympics gets closer, the Chinese Government has decided to ban all sorts of video and audio content. What’s on the list? Well, it’s “wronged spirits and violent ghosts, monsters, demons, and other inhuman portrayals, strange and supernatural storytelling for the sole purpose of seeking terror and horror,” according to their administration.
I applaud China for wanting to put a cleaner face on things, but am thankful that we’ll still get all those crazy J-Horror remakes from Japan, such as The Ring, The Ring 2 (adapted from Ringu) The Grudge (from Ju-on), and the latest installment, The …read more
