Celebrate ‘Women in Horror Month’ in February
January 15, 2010 by Alison
I first learned about Women in Horror month by landing on the Ax Wound website run by Hannah Neurotica. Her zine focuses on gender in the horror genre so it seemed logical that she would pen a manifesto about Women in Horror and tag February as the month to celebrate the feminine in fear.
There’s an interesting conversation with Fangoria’s Rebekah McKendry on Ax Wound which everyone should check out. I have a background in academics like Rebekah, so I always enjoy reading her point of view on these matters. After what I imagine to be many conversations like these with …read more

Exclusive Interview With David Richmond-Peck From ‘V’
November 24, 2009 by Alison
When the TV series V hit the air in 1983, it quickly established itself as the thinking man’s sci-fi–an allegorical and creative imagining that combined suspense, action and philosophical drama (with a nice helping of cheese thrown in for good measure). It was easy to ignore the low production value for a great story that at its heart was very human despite the alien theme. This is the very reason I feel confident posting an ultimately sci-fi themed topic on a horror website.
Aside from being smart and seriously entertaining, there are many reasons that the show appealed to horror audiences. …read more
Davide Melini’s New Giallo Short Film ‘The Puzzle’
November 19, 2009 by Alison
In case you’re not one of the cool kids and haven’t been reading my regular column on giallo film at my other writing haunt, Horror Squad, go here to read the first post in an ongoing series of reviews and giallo tidbits. In my write up, I give a detailed rundown about the Italian film genre, but let me summarize what this amazing film genre is all about.
From ye olde Wikipedia: Giallo is an Italian 20th century genre of literature and film, which in Italian indicates crime fiction and mystery. In the English language, however, it is used in a …read more
Scientists in France Living Zombie Movie Cliche
November 18, 2009 by Alison
Scientists in Lyon, France are attempting to bring on the zombie apocalypse by blending genetic material from the highly contagious H1N1 virus (Swine Flu), with it’s cousin H5N1 (Avian Flu).
Virologists at the Jean Mérieux/INSERM facility are trying to determine if the two viruses might reassort to create a disease with the worst properties of both. They hope by doing this that researchers will be able to predict the behavior of future pandemics. As one would expect, the lab is high-security and before researchers can even begin working, they must pass a three-week training course. They are never allowed inside the …read more

EW’s Team Twilight Interview Preview
Entertainment Weekly recently interviewed the stars of Twilight: New Moon for their November 13 issue. Taylor Lautner, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson chat about the usual including Pattinson’s hair. “I sound so stupid, but in a lot of ways the hair is 75 percent of my performance,” Pattinson says. Oy. Here’s a portion of the interview which hits newsstands tomorrow:
EW: How are you all coping with living in a fishbowl?
Robert Pattinson: It really depends on the mood. When I met you last year [before Twilight came out], I was doing interviews very sporadically and I never got recognized. Now it’s …read more

Ti West Interview: ‘Dead & Lonely’ Stills and Exclusive Preview
October 20, 2009 by Alison
Yesterday I told you about Ti West’s latest project, Dead & Lonely set to premiere on IFC.com Monday, October 26 at Noon ET/PT. I spoke with Ti today to find out more about the web series which centers around two lonely Los Angeles singles(Justin Rice & Paige Stark), brought together via an Internet dating website, DateOrDie.net. Catch is, one of them is a vampire. West blends the classic vampire mythos with a tale of modern loneliness in this dark, comedic short.
I think the web series is a flexible and exciting new medium. What appeals to you about this format?

‘The Human Centipede: First Sequence’
September 6, 2009 by Alison
‘Body horror’, also known as ‘biological horror’, is nothing new. Most horror fans are familiar with David Cronenberg’s films that focus on mutation, degeneration and other fun stuff. Most recently Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 uses this type of horror to discuss xenophobia and apartheid. And now Dutch director Tom Six brings us The Human Centipede.
Two American girls (Ashley Williams & Ashlynn Yennie) become stranded during their travels and come across the home of Dr. Heiter (Dieter Laser), a leader in the field of conjoined twin surgery. He drugs, kidnaps and imprisons the girls, along with a Japanese man (Akihiro Kitamura), to create …read more
