Can Marshall’s "Descent" Sequel Rise Above?
When six sexy female friends get together for a weekend caving (or as I learned to called it …spelunking) expedition, and it’s in a horror movie, something is bound to go wrong. In this case, the women end up trapped underground with what used to be humans, fighting for their lives. This is the premise for the movie, The Descent, directed by Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers). Now, the sequel is on the rise, and the question is, will it be enough?
It seems the sexy thriller will have the survivors of the first movie, as well as the same director and production companies (Celador Films and Pathe). The only bad thing I could say about this movie is that I was so scared that I fell into a depression upon seeing it. I was glad it was over, but for the right reasons. Psychological thrills can be the most horrifying.
The chills were not just from the predicament of the characters, but more in their reaction to the predicament. The writer of this film got it right when he let the characters be the heroes, and the monsters be the backdrop. Making a movie about a monster can be done easily, but a successful film has the monster and the heroes, and the heroes are the real deal. If the sequel follows this premise, it will be another windfall for every one involved.
