R.I.P. Paul Naschy 1934 – 2009

December 1, 2009 by Alison

Even though he was often referred to as the Spanish Lon Chaney, actor Paul Naschy had a fan base all his own. In addition to his talents as one of horror’s favorite werewolves, Waldemar Daninsky, he had a colorful career as a screenwriter and director. Sadly, his battle with pancreatic cancer came to an end this week. Paul Naschy died at the age of 75.

Right up until the end, Naschy was sending messages of thanks and appreciation to the fans on his Facebook page. He was a warm and kind person who loved what he did. His last roles in 2004 were in the films Rojo Sangre which he wrote and starred in and Rottweiler, a sci-fi horror flick.

Naschy was the only actor to portray Dracula, The Mummy, Frankenstein, Fu Manchu and a werewolf but he is most famous for the Hombre Lobo series based on the character of Waldemar Daninsky, who he played in 12 different films. You can read more about his life and his work on the Paul Naschy forum or the The Mark of Naschy website. Enjoy this interview with Naschy which was featured on Troma’s release of The Hanging Woman.
