‘Fright Night’ Gets a Remake
Well, the remakes keep on coming and this one makes me feel a little funny inside. Mad Men writer and producer Marti Noxon will pen DreamWorks Studios’ remake of the 1985 horror-comedy Fright Night.
I’ve heard about this for some time now and I suppose there was really no avoiding it. Everyone is trying to capitalize on the vampire phenomenon these days and with remakes happening in spades I suppose it was only a matter of time. Also notice that the horror-comedy is making a huge comeback? Films like Zombieland, Drag Me to Hell and Jennifer’s Body were all released this year along with DVD revamps of classics like Night of the Creeps.
Noxon is attached to one of the best-written shows on air right now, Mad Men (I still need to see it!), but she also wrote/produced for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel (as well as Private Practice, Grey’s Anatomy and Prison Break). She’s no stranger to the vampire snark and if anyone would be a good pick for this remake it would be her. Not that this makes me feel any better.
In the 1985 film, Charley (William Ragsdale) discovers that his new neighbor is a vampire and a delightful mix of goofball comedy and drama ensues. Chris Sarandon plays Jerry Dandridge, the bloodthirsty neighbor. He was probably one of my first movie star crushes–swoon! Roddy McDowall’s character is the perfect Van Helsing throwback of a washed up nighttime horror TV host. All in all the film is a fun watch with the right amount of gore and laughs. I hope Noxon will do it some justice. No word yet on who will direct or star. Who are some of your picks?
For now enjoy the cheesetastic but kinda hot dance scene that I remember my father making me shut my eyes for when I would watch it. Hah!
