A Brooklyn Oddity: Morbid Anatomy
October 29, 2009 by Alison
Joanna Ebenstein is a graphic designer nestled in a Gowanus, Brooklyn studio among an ever-growing collection of books, art, ephemera and artifacts. Sounds like a dream to me. Those of you who are squeamish should know that her collection explores the interstices of art and medicine, death and culture. Yep, still sounds like a dream to me!
The Morbid Anatomy Library is open to the public and contains some rare volumes not available elsewhere. Also on view are photographs and curio objects–all of which act as a source material for her website, Morbid Anatomy. Joanna has no problem looking for these whimsical wonders in the strangest of places and like most artists, appreciates someone else’s cast-offs–happy to give them a whole new life in her morbid museum.
You can visit the library most weekdays, Monday-Friday, between 12-6 PM. It would be wise to email (morbidanatomy@gmail.com) Joanna before you plan your trip to confirm availability.
