‘Saw’ Director to Remake Troma’s ‘Mother’s Day’

July 30, 2009 by Alison

I have a huge soft spot in my heart for all things Troma. The Toxic Avenger, Bloodsucking SIPA USA/30043370/000016Freaks, Maniac Nurses Find Ecstasy and Sgt. Kabukiman N.Y.P.D are some of my favorites. When I heard that Darren Lynn Bousman was going to remake Troma’s Mother’s Day I was a bit confused.

Bousman spoke with Bloody-Disgusting at the San Diego Comic-Con.

“This film is more along the lines of Cape Fear. The original 1980 Mother’s Day was a movie for its time. I love it. But that movie would not work now.”

So, is this a remake or its own movie? Bousman has said the film will be its own movie but there are “…tons of similarities to the original film.” It seemed like an odd choice for the director of  Saw II-IV given that Bousman has said he is aiming to make this a much darker film. Part of any Troma movie’s charm is its blend of horror and lewd humor. Bousman has assured us that “…there will be a mixture of dark humor,” but I hope the movie doesn’t end up taking itself too seriously. Look for Mother’s Day sometime in 2010.

Just to clarify this is the Mother’s Day where the old lady demands her two hillbilly backwoods sons rape and murder girls right? That being said and having just recently watched and reviewed that movie- I completely agree that doing an exact remake of that movie would not work these days.

People are so uppity about rape- well rightly so- but honestly if someone puts even a hint of rape in their movies they are immediately put on the chopping block and basically referred to as satan. If those people saw Cannibal Holocaust or Last House on the Left they probably wouldn’t be so shocked to see it in movies today. And I will stand by the fact that you have not witnessed a rape in a movie until you see a woman get raped by a pointy rock. *shudder*

Mother’s Day was hilarious and the revenge sequence at the end was amazing.
I am eager to learn more about this “remake” However, I do hope they keep in that little gem of a scene where the girl suffocates the old woman with a giant pair of inflatable boobs. Genius.

that would be the one! well, i don’t think there’s any way to get around the controversy some filmmakers experience by putting things like rape and torture in their films. i think it all depends on how that director handles it, etc. but there have been films that used rape which have left viewers feeling empowered. for instance, i have spoken with several women who feel I Spit on Your Grave did just that. i’m curious to see how Bousman will handle the film considering his background with Saw. also Andre, you tried to post your blog link but it didn’t work so i’ll post it here: http://horrordigest.blogspot.com
