"Preacher’s" Tale of Possession Coming To Film

October 29, 2008 by Alexandra

If you’re looking for a film that blends supernatural and religious themes with "Preacher" by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon a western style, Columbia Pictures has purchased the rights to Preacher, a popular 1990 Vertigo comic series, written by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon.

In the comic, Jesse Custer, a preacher in a small Texas town, becomes possessed by a supernatural being called Genesis. Custer, who is now a very powerful being in his own right, goes on a journey across the U.S. to find God.

He travels with a vampire named Cassidy and his girlfriend, Tulip. In their travels, they come across an assortment of friends and fiends. If the film brings along with it the comic’s style, and rich characterization, it will definitely be a hit!

THR reports that at some point, there was a plan for an HBO one-hour series, but it never happened. Judging from the success of HBO’s True Blood, Preacher might have been a ringer. For now, no writers have been selected but Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Road To Perdition, Jarhead) is the chosen director.
