What Is It About "The Happening"?
June 13, 2008 by Alexandra
An amazing spoilery interview of M. Night Shyamalan, Mark Wahlberg, John Leguizamo, and Zooey Deschanel is available at Fearnet. I must say, things became extremely personal in the interviews.
This is no surprise, as Shyamalan puts a lot of himself into his movies, and naturally it happens the same way for his cast.
Things discussed are how the actors prepared themselves for the roles, some of M. Night’s personal beliefs, and how the movie mirrors some of his views about the world. The actors also share some of their biggest fears.
One thing that Night says about the film that has me scratching my head is that he calls it a “B movie”. The term B movie has always meant that a film is low budget project (among other things). In terms of cleverness and uniqueness, B movies offer something different, and in this case, it could be that Night has created a film that indeed reflects the current times, and plays on the high emotions we already have about the world as it stands.
Some of us take our entertainment very seriously, and I for one think this film needs a fun look, and that could be why Night calls The Happening a B-movie, because it’s really just something to think about. I don’t know if Night intends to weird us out, but I suspect I’ll be thinking about his B movie comment as I watch the film. You can check out the film’s soundtrack, by composer James Newton Howard, pictured above.
