India Says M. Night Shyamalan Done Good!

May 5, 2008 by Alexandra

The Padmashri is one of India’s highest civilian awards, and horror writer/ director M. Night Shyamalan is the proud recipient of it for his contribution to cinema. He also talked about his new movie, The Happening, which debuts on the big screen on June 13!

Shyamalan had much to say while in India today talking about his new movie. The Happening, stars Mark Wahlberg as a school teacher who is in danger of a natural disaster that has befallen the world. Zoey Deschanel (Bridge To Terabithia) also stars in this film. She also held the lead role as “DG”, in Sci-Fi’s TV mini-series, Tin Man.

Shyamalan told the reporters that the movie “is meant to scare you”, and that he likes to cast action heroes in his films. I never thought much about it, but he does make a point of putting those action heroes, like Bruce Willis and Mel Gibson in some very interesting roles. Mel Gibson as the preacher who lost his wife in the movie Signs was genius. Bruce Willis as the security guard in Unbreakable was phenomenal.

I wonder what M. Night’s intentions are when he says the movie is scary. I know that whatever he tells us about the movie, it won’t matter, because his movies are always a shock, in one way or another, and this is a very good thing. Although his work has gotten mixed reviews, you can respect the fact that he’s always brought something different to the stage, and that’s more than you can say about some artists. Bravo!
