Screamstress: The Latest Horror On DVD

April 23, 2008 by Alexandra

51ToeJsTCAL._SL500_AA240_ Some amazing scary movies are on DVD right now. From un-named monsters that rip through Manhattan, to a film about sinister phone calls, there’s something for everyone:

The Orphanage – Directed by Guillermo Del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth), The Orphanage follows a woman who returns to a large abandoned manor with her family where she stayed as an orphan as a child. Soon she discovers there are more than just memories there, and she finds some unresolved feelings as well. This beautiful film goes beyond the pale of predictable horror, giving viewers a unique yet deeper level of scare.

41k-G2 RHXL._SL500_AA240_ One Missed Call- One Missed Call is the latest installment of J-Horror or Japanese supernatural stories, and features some unexplainable deaths and related phone calls. The film is an American remake of writer Yasushi Akimoto’s novel Chakushin Ari. Notably, the female lead in this film is our own Shannyn Sossamon who portrays Coraline in CBS’s Moonlight.

51WYRiUUwcL._SL500_AA240_ The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, directed by John Carl Buechler, is a true adaptation of the Robert Louis Stevenson tale. I recently re-read the original novella, and am excited that there’s an update. In this remake, actor Tony Todd who portrays “Candyman” portrays Dr. Jekyll/Mr Hyde.

51AlDGKfSaL._SL500_AA240_ Cloverfield - Cloverfield is an upscale & clever disaster movie, produced by “Mr. Bad Robot”, J.J. Abrams, about a guy who accepts a promotion that will send him to Japan. During his going-away party in Manhattan, things start to get a bit crazy as the disaster begins.
