Horror Director Guillermo Del Toro to Direct Hobbit And LOTR Prequel

April 25, 2008 by Alexandra

Famed director Guillermo Del Toro, known for such horror films as the critically acclaimed Pan’s Labyrinth, and his production of the latest film to hit DVD, The Orphanage, has just closed the deal to direct The Hobbit and its sequel. Although known for directing horror and comic book adaptation films, this may be new ground for Del Toro, but I doubt it.

The Hobbit and its sequel will fill in the gap of the 60 year period between The Hobbit and The Fellowship Of The Ring. Many LOTR fans are just happy to see a continuation of the story, but I think his involvement is a major plus.

Besides his work on Hellboy II: The Golden Army, he’s going to be creating Doctor Strange, and At The Mountains Of Madness, based on the H.P. Lovecraft title of the same name. Honestly, I cannot say enough about this director, as he always manages to break new ground in his work.

The Hobbit and its sequel are a 4 year project, and the fans will be counting down the days. It will be interesting to see which actors return from the other LOTR movies. And where is Peter Jackson in all this?  He’ll be executive producing this huge project!
