13 Scariest Horror Movie Moments, #3

November 6, 2005 by

We’ve made it to the top three scary moments in horror movie history, and you haven’t run away screaming yet. Now let’s see if we can change that…

#3: I See You… in Jaws

Anybody who knows me knows Jaws would be in my top three. How much do I hate sharks? Words cannot describe.

The over-the-top scenes in Jaws aren’t nearly as frightening to me as the ones where the shark quietly lurks, far below in the dark waters, peering up at a pair of defenseless people-legs. Just the IDEA of being in the huge ocean, with eyes staring up at you…

I grew up in Florida and do you think I ever went into the ocean? HELL NO. All those eyes…

It’s going to eat me!

Of course, as most childhood traumas can be, my fear of ocean lurkers can be traced back to my parents. When I was very young, we’d visit relatives, before I developed a fear of all those eyes, and would go to the beach and swim all day. Without fail, my mom and aunt would always shout out to the kids: Watch out for the undertow! Don’t go any further or the undertow will get you! The undertooooow will kiiiilll you!

Well, my overly active imagination, upon hearing this unfamiliar word, quickly converted it into ‘under TOE’, and filled my head with visions of an evil giant toe lurking beneath the water, gnashing its big teeth and waiting to eat me. Yes, the toe had teeth. How else would it eat all the bad children?

It’s going to eat me!

So you can see how I developed my fear of all things nautical. If you want to know the embarrassing truth, sometimes, to scare myself, I get out the Jaws DVD and stare at the cover, where the shark is staring up at his victim. I can only stand it for so long, then I fling the DVD away and run to my room and cry like a little girl.

So, here’s to you, Jaws. You bastard.

    Haaaahahahahhaa… Under Toe. Bwaahahahaha!

  2. I am so glad you included this one–but I have to say, it made me have a huge LOVE for sharks (even though the movie scared the hell out of me). Maybe a better word is fascination. Anyway, what is really scary is that undertoe! Eeek!

  3. Rhys says:

Good for you Christina–I’m glad, unlike me, you could turn your fear into something positive! I don’t know how to make the toe positive, though… :)

  4. I don’t think there is any possible way–that is maybe the scariest picture I have ever seen!! LOL

  5. Rhys says:

    Ingrid…The Undertoe’s coming to get you…da-dum, dadum!

  6. Tracy says:

Ha! The Undertoe is indeed spooky.

Jaws didn’t make me afraid of sharks specifically as much as simply being in in water that’s too deep to see the bottom, where all sorts of unidentified nasties may be lurking and ready to grab me. Combined with a fear of being underwater that came from some movie where a girl gets trapped under the surface of a swimming pool by a supernatural force (anyone know which movie I’m talking about? I’ve always wondered…), and it’s amazing I go swimming at all.

  7. Rhys says:

Hi Tracy! I know what you mean…all those things watching you…eek! ooh, that movie sounds familiar…I’ll try to remember the name. :)

  8. I can’t sleep, I am having bad dreams about the undertoe. Thanks Rhys. LOL

  9. Rhys says:

Poor Christina!!! I’ll have to slay that little bastard. :)
