#12: The Discovery of Karen in Alice, Sweet Alice

Alice, Sweet Alice is a horror gem that surprisingly, many horror buffs have not seen.

The imagery is chilling, the acting is superb, and the atmosphere and characters make the viewer uneasy during the entire film.

12-year-old Alice is jealous of her little sister, Karen, who is everything Alice is not: beautiful, sweet, adored, Mommy’s favorite. Alice likes to wear a raincoat and freaky translucent mask to scare Karen, and torture her in various ways: stealing her dolls, locking her in scary buildings, etc.

Alice’s jealousy reaches new heights on the day of Karen’s communion. Pretty little Karen wears a veil and necklace coveted by her plain older sister, and Alice gets into the communion line of small children. Suddenly, Karen is yanked out of line, strangled, dumped into a covered bench, and set on fire…by a rain-coated figure in a creepy mask. Is it Alice?

A nun discovers Karen’s body and amid the screaming, there is a brief close-up of the burned remains in the bench. Most people cite the killer-under-the-stairs moment of this film as the scariest, but it’s this reveal that creeps the hell out of me.

Just seconds ago, Karen was a beautiful child, and to see her reduced to something so…non-human…is horrifying.
